The 90-second insurance audit
Five questions that surface most coverage problems. Grab your dec page and a timer.
You do not need an afternoon to sanity-check your auto insurance. You need your declarations page and 90 seconds. Answer these five questions.
1. Is everyone who drives your cars on the policy?
Roommates, partners, and newly licensed teens who drive regularly should be listed. An unlisted regular driver is the most common reason claims get contested.
2. Do your liability limits cover what you own?
Find the three numbers (like 100/300/100). If your net worth is meaningfully higher than your per-accident limit, you are self-insuring the difference without meaning to.
3. Could you write a check for your deductible today?
A $1,500 deductible you cannot actually afford is a coverage gap wearing a discount costume. Pick the highest deductible you could genuinely pay tomorrow morning.
4. Are you paying for a car you no longer drive?
Sold it, totaled it, parked it at your parents’ house? Vehicles linger on policies. Every month a ghost car stays listed is a month of pure waste.
5. When did a human (or a very diligent robot) last shop this policy?
If the answer is “when I bought it,” you are the customer every carrier’s pricing model is built to enjoy. Rates move constantly. Loyalty without verification is a subscription to overpaying.
Scored five for five? Genuinely well done. Set a reminder for your next renewal.
Missed one? That is normal, and fixable in an afternoon.
